Artist/boss dilemas:
Got myself a few small issues tonight.
First off, I am expanding my business for 2010 by finally hiring a few folks to work the store with me.
My dilema is twofold. I want to make sure the people who work here understand that even though I want the shop to be a laid back enviroment, they are still expected to pull their own weight and prove that they deserve to be here.
Number two is the pay scale. Any typical job pays by salary or hourly and that is pretty much it. Our shop doesn't work that way. We make our business happen by the work we do(airbrushing/cartooning,etc. So we get paid by the job.
A lot of airbrush shops require the artist to supply his/her own brushes and pays accordingly. We want the artists to use what we have here and not create the problem of this is yours and that is mine.
The pay rate bugs me a bit because I know what the shop needs to make in order to stay alive, and I want the artists to feel they will get paid well for a good days work. This is where my problem is. What is a good payscale.....I know it depends on the skill level, but should it be a percentage of the sale before tax, or a small hourly rate plus a set rate per shirt based on difficulty?
See what I mean......just want to be fair but not lose my shirt in the meantime. Anyone out there have suggestions.....write back and help a confused but well meaning artist.
Hell, if the suggestion you make helps me out....I will help to make you a design as a thank you!
Let me know what you think out there.
Thanks
Wes

What is the nicest thing you've ever done that no one knows about?
If I tell you then it wouldn't be the nicest thing that I have done that no one else knows about...right?
It was bringing gifts and food to a family who couldn't afford it, but we did it in secret, by acting as the delivery folks"just doin my job, mam."
I just answered this Featured Question; you can answer it too!

cold day brain freeze!
Another cold day here in texas... It's been going down to the single digits here and only 20-30 for the high. Great Hockey weather, but hard on the painters man!
I am in the process of trying to script out ideas for our web show, but it's hard to do when I am the only one in the show at this time. Any ideas on subjects for my show are welcomed! My web show is called the "Freaky Tiki" or just Toonz Ink! Live.It will be about airbrushing and all other art froms, but it will get very boring without a few good skits or spoof type commercials to keep it interesting. My idea of the show would run kinda like the pbs show "Biz-Kids" and mad tv/icarly(i know this sound stupid, but around here it will work, just need t keep it fresh)
Well...i am back to painting, got a customer up front so bye for now. Please shoot out your ideas and let me know what u think. If it fits, I promise to use it and give u credit on the show and my site, or even find a way to get u to be on the show via webcam too! That would be fun! Aloha and stay warm folk up north,be safe!
